30% of New Zealand’s road accidents are work-related, including 31 fatalities last year.

Use of vehicles for any business purpose is now deemed to be “a place of work” but historically employers haven’t acknowledged driving behaviour as a work-related skill, nor have they provided robust driver support resources in the event of a collision.  But the new Health & Safety at Work regulations will apply from April 4th so change is coming soon!  In the meantime research conducted by the Government’s Fleet Safety programme indicates that companies have little understanding of their crash risk or their responsibilities to manage on-road Health & Safety.

    Insurers are very Health & Safety conscious and provide very good salvage service in emergencies. The main brands have also completed H&S audits on the top quality repairers. I’d be more concerned about some of the panelbeaters courtesy cars , they’re often old and substandard so could be a H&S risk. Some are free and other panelbeaters charge for them so are better quality courtesy cars. This service could be better controlled and standardised so clients know exactly what to expect, particularly that they safe.
